I had an idea about the interplay of nature and fantasy, and how specifically plants and animals will often be shown to exist in a fantastical setting, yet exhibit almost no morphological traits that would have specifically evolved in response to some magic system in nature.
If magic can be harnessed just by some runes being carved on the ground, then why aren’t flowers and trees growing in formation with those runes to harness their power?
An example of this might be a tree that, as it drys and shrinks, warps into the shape of a water rune in order to provided that aforementioned water in extreme dry spells.
That’s just one idea but there could be created a whole anthology on nearly any fictional world with a magic system. Both flora and fauna exhibiting evolutionary traits that tie into the magical element of your IP is a really fantastic way to add depth and create unique and memorable ecosystems. Though if you do it too far, the audience may not be able to recognize what the organism is, so be sure to lean heavy into the nature and only slot in 5% magical traits, then add more as feels appropriate
Anyway, so that idea is where these sketches came from. I think I arrived some rather unique plant life here that could be used as herbs in potion brewing, or maybe as reagents for certain spells. A mage could take advantage of the plant’s natural form to channel a more complex spell, much like we humans might use a dried gourd as a horn, when carved and blown into correctly.
I’m off to do some fauna for this idea, please tag me if you decide to try out this design (idea?) in your own worlds! Cheers.
